6 sure-fire ways to impress your boss

If you’re trying to get ahead at work, the main person you need to impress is your boss. But other than producing high quality work at a fast pace, what else might you need to do to get your employers attention?

1. Complete the tasks everyone forgets

There are little things in every workplace that everybody forgets, from taking care of the overlooked admin processes to fixing paper-jammed shredders.

You don’t want to be rushing around the office trying to do everyone’s jobs for them as that is just too blatant, but regularly pitching in and taking pride in your work area will bode well for your career. If you’re always helping sort out the little problems in the office, you’ll soon get noticed for all the right reasons.

2. Come in early

By arriving an extra 10-15 minutes early you give employers the impression you’re there because you want to get cracking on your daily tasks rather than arriving at 8:59 because you have to.

And of course you should always leave late where possible. But not too late as this could look like you’re behind on your work and are failing to manage time effectively. 15-30 minutes overtime is healthy if you’re looking to impress.

3. Save company money

It’s simple really, spend less and make more. Contribute to the company’s profits by cutting down on the expenses and keep an eye out for ways the company can spend less and earn extra cash. Make sure you share these ideas as often as possible as one day the saved money may come back to you in the form of a pay rise.

4. Take the initiative

If you’re handling your current responsibilities, why not take on more? Find ways for the company to improve and take action. If you see a new project or something that needs doing, take it upon yourself to at least get it started.

5. Have an informed opinion

Most people have an opinion on the way their company works or the industry sector, but very few have an informed opinion.

Know the state of your industry and marketplace you work in. Then, develop an opinion about how your business could improve and share it with your boss at an appropriate time. Whilst your employer may not agree with you, they will certainly be impressed with your effort, courage and knowledge of the sector.

6. Keep a tidy desk

Lastly, you want to take a minute at the end of the day to ensure your desk is tidy. Not too tidy that your desk looks as though it’s never seen a hard day’s work, but tidy enough to show that you care.
