Yorkshire chef beefs up with supermarket deal

CHEF James Mackenzie is set to launch a range of “extra special” products onto the shelves of Asda this month.

A beef joint complete with horse radish, beef dripping and parsley stuffing will be one of the products soon to hit Asda’s shelves, along with pork with apple, black pudding and lovage stuffing and rack of lamb with redcurrant and mint butter.

His products can also be found in Morrisons as of last week, following the launch of Two Chefs Ale – which was developed with the help of Michelin-starred chef, Andrew Pern and the Great Yorkshire Brewery.

Mr Mackenzie is best known for his Beverley-based Michelin-star restaurant, The Pipe and Glass Inn, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. He is also the founder of the Golden Apron award which annually crowns Yorkshire’s best young chef in conjunction with Yorkshire Wolds cookery school.

The award-winning chef was taught how to butcher whole animals at Yorkshire Coast College in Scarborough, where he gained a “solid foundation” for his career.

The trio of roasting joints have been developed as part of the Golden Apron brand and Asda’s Extra Special range.

He said: “All roasted joints were developed with last year’s winner, Kurtus from Selby – he came up with some ideas, we talked it through and then we developed the products with Asda.

“They will all have the Golden Apron logo on as well, so we wanted to use the publicity from that to lever it into next year’s competition.”
