Turner & Townsend delivers £28m Academy

A £28m free school developed on a brownfield site, part of the Education Quarter that has emerged on Leeds’ Southbank, has opened its doors.

After two years of operating from temporary facilities within The Morley Academy, the Ruth Gorse Academy opened its doors on Black Bull Street earlier this month.

The development accommodates 1,580 pupils and 150 staff.

The design provides for a variety of multi-use spaces and the delivery of the full range of curriculum subjects and SEN support.

Phase one includes general teaching classrooms, state of the art sports facilities, science labs, multi-use spaces and SEN support, while phase two which will include additional general teaching spaces and facilities, will be handed over later in the year.

Working with BAM, Turner & Townsend, a winner at TheBusinessDesk.com’s Yorkshire Business Masters earlier this year, were appointed as the technical advisor which included providing project management, cost management and CDM-C Services and providing a turnkey appointment for architectural, mechanical and electrical, and civil and structural design related services.

Director Stewart Binns said: “Turner & Townsend are delighted to have contributed to this important build.  As the latest Academy in Leeds, it will undoubtedly raise the standard of education in the region.

“Students attending the Academy should be proud that they are part of such a contemporary estate, specifically designed to enhance the education that they receive.”

Work on phase two continues as planned, set to be delivered in October 2016.
