850 bus drivers to strike as talks with Arriva bosses break down

MORE than 850 bus drivers in West Yorkshire are set to strike on Monday (14 November) after talks with Arrive bosses broke down.

The drivers from five depots across the region in Castleford, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike, Selby and Wakefield are in dispute with Arriva bosses over pay and shifts.

Unite the union says they are being forced to drive up to five and a half hours without a break. Drivers are also looking for a 20p an hour pay rise and reduction in driving time.

Unite regional officer Phil Bown said: “Strike action is not a step our members take lightly, but after nearly 12 months of circular talks they have become increasingly angry about being strung along by Arriva bosses.

“We would urge Arriva bosses to sit back down with us and negotiate meaningfully to avoid disruption to the travelling public.”

Nigel Featham, for Arriva Yorkshire and North East, said “We have been working tirelessly over the last year with Unite to bring pay talks to an amicable conclusion.

“But despite our best efforts and multiple offers to increase pay and conditions we have received notification to strike.”
