Whiskey supplier lodges plans for malt plant

A PLANNING application is being considered that would see a malt giant which supplies the whiskey trade develop a major plant at North Dalton.

Malt giant Muntons has lodged proposals that would see a malt finishing plant built at Tithe Top Farm on Huggate Road in North Dalton

Muntons has applied for 12,981 sq ft of industrial space and plans on constructing a malt finishing plant and offices. Existing farm buildings will be retained and reused.

It said it had identified demand for peated malt, used to flavour malt whiskey and speciality beers. The process to peated malt takes several days and the plant will be open 24 hours a day.

It will be exported to Asia and America through ports at Immingham, Hull or Liverpool and to Scottish distilleries by road.

Six full time positions would be created at the plant said the firm.

Muntons, established in 1921, produces malt and malted ingredients, supplying the brewing and distilling industries. The company also owns a plant, the Flamborough Maltings, just outside Bridlington.

The East Riding Of Yorkshire Council is considering the application.
