More than 350 jobs saved as payroll giant is bought out of administration

364 jobs have been safeguarded at Earn Extra, a payroll specialist based in Brighouse.

Earn Extra 139 was founded in 2006 by Sharon Shuttle and John Jaekel.

The payroll company delivers Umbrella, CIS and PAYE Payroll services for the telecoms, construction, overhead power lines, utilities and civil engineering sectors.

Mike Kienlen and Mark Ranson from Armstrong Watson were appointed as administrators on January 23. Both the business and assets have been sold and 364 jobs have been safeguarded as a result.

Its latest accounts are overdue, but accounts for the year to March 2015 show that the business was growing “in line with expectations”. Revenues were up to £18.3m, but profits declined significantly, from £66,259 to £18,160.

In August 2016, the company was named and shamed by the Government as a minimum wage offender, owing one employee more than £400.

It has been a bad year for payroll companies, with Hudson Contract Services taking a hit over director incentives, having to pay HMRC £400,000. It managed to stay in the black despite this, and a £1.6m corporate tax bill.

Shuttle and Jaekel have been contacted for comment.
