6 things to do in Yorkshire this weekend

Unsure what to do with the first weekend in March? We’ve compiled a list of events and activities to enjoy and get involved with across Yorkshire over the next couple of days.

1. Outlines Festival

Date: Friday March 3 – Saturday March 4
Location: Various across Sheffield

From the creators of Sheffield’s Tramlines comes a new winter festival hosted at some of the city’s most popular venues. Expect a mix of genres as both established names and upcoming artists take to the stage at The Harley, Queens Social Club, Plug, the Leadmill
and more. For the first time, the festival will be taking place over two-days and will also be accessible for music-lovers age 14+.

2. Romeo and Juliet Romeo & Juliet
Date: Friday March 3 – Saturday March 4
Location: West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds
Shakespeare’s classic exploration of teenage love and violence is transformed in a vibrant new production set against an epic northern landscape. A brutal and long standing feud between two families, the Capulets and the Montagues, is reignited in the stifling heat of a long hot summer – the air fills with rage and torment as a new generation takes up their parents’ hostilities. But out of the violence grows a seed of hope, born of a single stolen moment between two star crossed lovers from either side of the conflict. Their forbidden love as strong as their parents’ hate. Yet fate dictates their future and violent riots lead to fatal consequences.

3. The Cocktail Experience The cocktail experience

Location: Aspire Leeds
Following on from the success of the Pink Gorilla’s first event in 2016, The Cocktail Experience is back and promises to be bigger and better with even more bars and cocktails. The Cocktail Experience Part 2 will be taking over the Leeds’ city centre venue for one night only, transforming it into a cocktail lover’s paradise with 18 premium bars and their leading mixologists shaking up their unique creations.

4. Three ships exhibition exhibition in hull
Date: Thursday March 2 – Friday April 28
Location: Hull Maritime Museum, Hull
The fourth exhibition by the Yorkshire Ones – a textile and mixed media group of nine artists who take inspiration from Hull’s seafaring past. Focusing on three ships with relevance to Hull, Resolution, the ship used by Captain Cook on his second and third voyages, Morning, the reflief ship for Scott’s discovery expedition to Antarctica and Viola, Hull’s only remaining steam trawler. One of the highlights of the exhibition is a hand-embroidered replica waistcoat made from bark cloth which James Cook’s wife had planned to make for him to wear to meet King George III but did not finish after his murder.

5. Yorkshire Beard Day

Location: Scarborough Spa
The annual family friendly event for beard growers, lovers and appreciators is back this weekend with a whole host of beard-related activities and competitions. From 2pm at the Spa Sun Court, a friendly Beard competition will be taking place, along with bearded bands and artists, vintage vinyl records played on wind up gramophone players, specially brewed beard beer, stalls selling all manner of beard related products including beard oil, beard balms, beard and moustache combs, moustache wax, beard t-shirts, knitted beards and more. Games such as Beard Bingo will also be taking place along with prizes for the best fake beard for those unable to grow their own!

Date: Friday March 3 – Sunday March 5
Location: Various across Harogate
Harrogate’s first film festival is set to take place this weekend, aiming to captivate the residents and filmmakers of Harrogate and surrounding areas with new cinema experiences, film education, interactive events and competitions. With screenings of the best of cinema and independent film, the three-day festival hopes to take guests beyond the screen whilst giving film-makers a platform to showcase their work, develop their skills and learn from experts.
