Farm shop sows seeds for growth with six-figure investment

A farm shop in Driffield expects to boost revenue by 30% after replacing its existing premises with a new store and café with help from a six-figure investment.

The Farm Shop at Cranswick is a family-owned business. Originally a dairy farm, it first opened a shop in 1989 to sell its surplus dairy produce to customers across the region.

After decades of growth, and with support from HSBC’s commercial loan, the business commissioned a purpose built shop and café to replace its existing premises, growing its retail and leisure space from 2000 sq ft to more than 7000 sq ft.

The new shop and café has created 18 new local jobs, bringing the business’ total workforce to 33.

Helen Stones, owner of The Farm Shop at Cranswick, said: “The business has grown steadily over the last eight years so we saw larger premises as the next step in our growth. With the financial support of HSBC, we were able to realise our ambitions and commission a building to our exact specifications. These new premises not only give our customers an improved shopping experience but they now have the chance to sample our specialist pies and puddings in our café.”

Phil Look, HSBC’s area director for North Yorkshire and Humber, said: “The Farm Shop at Cranswick is an excellent example of a family-owned business with a clear vision for growth. Not only will the business see its revenue grow by almost a third, but it will also create employment for local people. We’re proud to support small and dynamic businesses like this which are the life blood of Yorkshire’s economy.”
