Viyella goes into administration

CLOTHING retailer Viyella is the latest long-established high street name to call in the administrators putting 450 jobs at risk.

The firm’s directors said that there was no alternative but to place the businesss, which was founded in 1784, into administration.

Viyella operates 40 stores, 64 concessions and four clearance outlets nationwide including stores across Yorkshire.

Its menswear and homeware business are unaffected.

Administrator Andrew Turpin said that it was hoped that the business would be sold quickly and that interested parties had already been in touch.

“The Viyella brand is trusted and respected both at home and abroad, and we expect that the prospect of a sale of the brand and the infrastructure will raise significant interest amongst other retailers,” he said.

Viyella was first registered as the name of a wool/cotton cloth. Until recently it was part of Coats Viyella and manufactured womenswear to retailers including Marks and Spencer.

After splitting from Coats Viyella the company has had a succession of owners.
