Peter Maughan joins Simpson Millar

YORKSHIRE law firm Simpson Millar has acquired a fellow law firm which specialises in clinical negligence cases as part of its expansion plans.

Gateshead-based Peter Maughan & Co will join Simpson Millar, with Peter Maughan continuing his ongoing work as a partner with the Leeds-based firm.

Peter Watson, managing partner at Simpson Millar, said the two firms were a “perfect match”.

Mr Watson said: “We will provide a solid support network around the existing practice and clients in Gateshead can look forward to receiving an improved quality of service.

“Peter Maughan is a well known figure locally with a long-standing reputation for his success in running complicated clinical negligence cases. He is known for having a sensitive and holistic approach to his cases which has year on year proven to be both popular and extremely successful.”

Mr Maughan has been providing legal advice for 25 years, specialising in medical negligence claims.

“This is an exciting time for my firm and me personally,” said Mr Maughan. “The team and I here in Gateshead will be able to continue our work but with the benefit of having access to an extensive national network.

“It was extremely important for me to make a deal with a reputable and honest firm – one which puts the clients first and delivers a quality service and results. Our clients will benefit from having a specialist local lawyer but with a national network of knowledge and experts.”

“I am proud of the reputation my practice has achieved while serving the local community. We now have clients from the Scottish borders to the dales of Yorkshire – all of whom will benefit from this deal.”

Although the practice will expand the range of legal services offered in a number of areas, it will in particular be looking at more complex cases involving brain injuries, cerebral palsy and birth trauma.

Peter Maughan & Co will be known as Simpson Millar.

Simspon Millar has eight offices, with its headquarters in Leeds, and specialises in personal injury claims, employment law, conveyancing, consumer protection, family law, financial services, disease/illness, medical negligence, road traffic accidents and wills and probate.

The firm is looking to grow in 2009 and has identified a number of potential acquisition targets.
