Sweet deal for North Yorkshire wholesaler

NORTH Yorkshire-based speciality food wholesaler Northern Select Foods has acquired the distribution arm of Sweet Moments – a Northallerton-based family business which makes and distributes quality handmade fresh desserts.
The Richmond-based family-run wholesaler has been distributing Sweet Moments products for more than eight years and the amalgamation of the distribution arms of the businesses will help both companies reduce costs and their carbon footprints.
The bakery division remains under the ownership of Sweet Moments.
Northern Select Foods delivers an extensive range of ambient, chilled and frozen products to the hotel and restaurant sector, as well as cafes, delicatessans, small retailers and outside caterers.
It was instrumental in being one of the first companies in the North to offer ambient fruit purees.
The company, which operates between Lincoln and the Scottish Borders and Scarborough to Windermere, sources the best quality produce and branded goods locally where possible, then regionally, nationally and internationally.
Michael Harrison, managing director of Northern Select Foods, said that every business was looking at efficiency drives and ways to cut costs in the current economic downturn.
“I have known the Soper family for many years and have distributed their fine quality desserts for more than eight years,” he said.
“To acquire the distribution arm of Sweet Moments made perfect sense to both businesses as we share a number of customers and operate in similar areas. This will allow us to be more efficient, cut down costs and reduce our environmental impact too.”
Sweet Moments was formed by the Soper family because of their passion for puddings.
The company makes traditionally handmade fresh desserts to order using the finest quality ingredients.
Different to other dessert companies, they have been described as an off-site personal pastry chef, servicing the hotel and restaurant trade with bespoke desserts to high quality specifications from cheesecakes and choux rings to traditional puddings and tortes.
