Netto appoints MD

DANISH supermarket group Netto, which was acquired by Asda in a £778m deal earlier this year, has appointed William Smith as its UK managing director.

Mr Smith, who is stepping up to the role from his current position as Netto UK’s property director, will help lead the integration between Leeds-based Asda, which is owned by US giant Wal-Mart, and Netto.

Mr Smith replaces Charles Kay who left the business earlier this month.

Netto has its UK headquarters at South Elmsall, near Pontefract.

Asda agreed to purchase all of Netto’s 194 UK stores back in May, subject to OFT approval.
