Deloitte delight but airport sale keeps out Keepmoat

MARTIN Jenkins of Deloitte was named Dealmaker of the Year for the fourth time at the Insider Dealmakers Awards 2007 last night but the £783m sale of Keepmoat, Yorkshire's biggest ever buyout, was pipped to Deal of the Year by Leeds Bradford Airport.

A record audience of 820 people – probably the biggest ever business dinner held in Leeds – packed Savile's Hall at the Royal Armouries to celebrate the region's continued corporate finance success.

Mr Jenkins, who handled the sale of Doncaster-based regeneration and construction firm Keepmoat as well as advising on the acquisition of Harrogate's Principal Hotels by Permira and the third buyout of vehicle leasing company Zenith, also took the title of Corporate Adviser of the Year and his team at Deloitte, which includes Roger Esler and David Frith, won Corporate Finance Advisory Team of the Year.

However it was the £145.5m sale of Leeds Bradford Airport by the five West Yorkshire local authorities to private equity firm Bridgepoint that was named Deal of the Year, sponsored by industrial property specialist Gent Visick.

The acquisition was advised by NM Rothschild in Leeds, led by David Forbes, who collected the award with representatives of Bridgepoint and the airport'schairman, Sir Graham Hall.

Corporate Law Firm of the Year sponsored by Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets was Eversheds while the Corporate Lawyer of the Year was Yunus Seedat, who advised on the sale of York convenience store chain Costcutter.

LDC, which sold GHD hair products group Jemella for £160m, was named Private Equity House of the Year while Colin Stirling of Aberdeen Asset Managers who has been involved in a series of deals in 2007, including Adler and Allan, won the Private Equity Provider of the Year title.

There was tough competition in the banking sector with the heavyweights slugging it out for a series of awards.Royal Bank of Scotland was named Corporate Bank of the Year while the Corporate Banker of the Year was Mike Selina of Yorkshire Bank who was involved in the deal for food firm Symingtons.

Asset Based Lender of the Year was GMAC Commercial Finance and the Asset Based Financier of the Year was John Gribbon of RBS Invoice Finance.

Tim Simpson and David Hardless of Park Place Corporate Finance took the title for Mid Market Advisory Firm of the Year while Yorkshire Bank took its secondaward when Simon Murden was named Young Dealmaker of the Year.

The evening also saw the Yorkshire dealmaking community celebrate the memory of Roger Powell of Royal Bank of Scotland, a five times Dealmakers winner, who tragically died earlier this year aged just 44.

Mr Powell's widow Tracy presented a new award in association with Royal Bank of Scotland called The Roger Powell Lifetime Achievement Award.

The first recipient of the award was the Hammonds corporate partner Ian Greenfield. Hull-born Mr Greenfield, who stepped down from running the law firm'sLeeds office earlier this year, told the audience: “Roger was an excellent banker and a consummate dealmaker and he had a smile that lit up a room.”

He said he accepted the award with a great deal of humility.
