Housebuilder\u00a0Avant Homes\u00a0has submitted plans to transform the historic 49-acre former Burtons clothing factory site in Burmantofts, Leeds, into a new sustainable community.<\/p>\n
Called Montague Place after Sir Montague Burton who founded the factory in 1921, the initial phase of the \u00a3100m development off Torre Road will comprise a mix of 302 energy efficient homes whilst being sympathetic to the cultural significance of the area.<\/p>\n
The proposed plans feature three- and four-storey one- and two-bedroom apartments alongside semi-detached and terraced homes ranging from one to four bedrooms. The proposal includes affordable housing and homes for private rent.<\/p>\n
In addition to the new homes, public green space to enable active lifestyles is proposed on the location of the site\u2019s original bowling green and gardens, whilst existing woodland will be retained and managed.<\/p>\n
There is also 8.5-acres of land marked for employment use which has the potential to create a range of employment opportunities for local residents.<\/p>\n
At its height, the factory was the largest employer in Leeds, employing 10,500 people and producing 30,000 suits per week for the Burton tailoring chain which became the Burton Group.<\/p>\n
To reflect this, Avant Homes has developed a heritage strategy which will see several features retained including art deco motifs and iconic Burton signage panels.<\/p>\n
