The first was the Rolling Stones in 1982, followed by Bruce Springsteen in 1985.

In 1987, Madonna kicked off the opening European leg of her ‘Who’s That Girl’ world tour at Roundhay in front of 73,000 fans. A year later, Michael Jackson celebrated his birthday at the park in front of thousands as he belted out hits including Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean as part of his Bad world tour.

In 2006, Robbie Williams was the last big act to grace the Roundhay stage before the park’s capacity was reduced to 19,999 as demand for the venue waned. However, in 2019, capacity was temporarily increased for two shows from Ed Sheeran.

A spokesperson for Leeds City Council said: “The application to increase the licence to 69,999 covers the entirety of Roundhay Park and would enable the council to potentially facilitate larger events from 2026, similar to the iconic events that Roundhay Park has hosted in the past.”

A consultation on the council’s application will run until 29 July.

Plans to massively increase capacity at Roundhay Park and recreate the
