The region’s high street has been dealt a further blow after supermarket chain Morrisons revealed which stores will close as part of its modernisation programme aimed at “renewing and reinvigorating” the business.

The Bradford-based group announced the closure of 103 convenience stores, café, florist, market kitchen and pharmacy earlier this year.

The news follows the closure of nine Pizza Hut restaurants across Yorkshire and The Humber region earlier this week after the chain was bought out of administration in a pre-pack deal

Chief executive Rami Baitiéh said the changes were essential to focus investment in areas that customers “really value” and to strengthen the company’s future growth. While most Morrisons Cafés will remain open, a small number are closing due to local challenges.

The announcement comes after Morrisons reported a 3 per cent rise in group like-for-like sales and total sales up 3.5 per cent to £4bn for the 13 weeks ending 27 July 2025. The retailer recorded double-digit growth in online sales but continues to face “significant cost headwinds” from new government measures and the impact of the autumn budget.
