A joint administrator of Sheffield Wednesday says initial interest shown in the club means progress is being made towards a positive outcome for the Championship team.<\/p>\n
In an update to fans, Kris Wigfield, managing partner at Begbies Traynor, added the support fans have shown for the club since it was placed in administration has showcased its value to potential buyers.<\/p>\n
Wigfield, Julian Pitts and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor were appointed joint administrators of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and of Sheffield 3 – the company which owns the club’s stadium – on 24 October 2025.<\/p>\n
It followed a period of turmoil for the club, which had suffered significant financial problems, resulting in delays in payment of wages to players and staff.<\/p>\n
Wigfield said: “While we are bound by confidentiality for much of this process, it is worth saying the fantastic support of the fans through attending matches and buying merchandise from the club shop has been vital to running the club and the ground day-to-day – this includes paying the wages of employees and players.<\/p>\n
“This also has a secondary effect of clearly demonstrating to prospective buyers the huge potential of this historic club.”<\/p>\n
He said he was aware of speculation in the media regarding price and bidders for the club, but that he could not comment on individuals.<\/p>\n
And he emphasised potential bidders need to provide proof of funding to cover \u00a350m liquid assets before access is granted to a data room.<\/p>\n
He said: “At this early stage in the process no bidders will have had a chance to fully review the complete picture of the business, assets or profits and losses, so any estimates on specific financials is simply premature guesswork.<\/p>\n
“The market will decide what the club is worth, in due course, when we are able to qualify all bidders and they have reviewed the financials and made their formal offers.<\/p>\n
“EFL rules state we have to market the club for 28 days from the point of entering administration, so there is still some time to go before getting close to the preferred bidder stage of the process.<\/p>\n
“Any purchaser will then need to pass the EFL ‘Owners’ and Directors’ Test’ to prove they are both \u2018fit and proper\u2019 and also that they have the financial substance to fund the club for a minimum of two years after purchase.<\/p>\n
“Yet, even at this early stage of proceedings we can be positive about the initial interest in the club. There is real progress being made in the efforts to find a suitably qualified buyer and owner that can help Sheffield Wednesday move forward.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
