Power generator Drax is acquiring UK-based asset optimisation specialist Flexitricity in a \u00a336m deal as it steps up plans to expand its flexible generation and battery storage portfolio.<\/p>\n

Drax said the acquisition of Edinburgh-headquartered Flexitricity from infrastructure investor Quinbrook is expected to complete in the first quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing adjustments.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2004, Flexitricity provides optimisation and route-to-market services for flexible energy assets, enabling participation in wholesale power, balancing and ancillary services markets. Its proprietary platform manages more than 900MW of operational assets, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), gas peaking plants, renewables and demand-side response.<\/p>\n

Drax said the transaction is expected to generate returns \u201csignificantly in excess\u201d of its weighted average cost of capital.<\/p>\n

The acquisition is intended to support the group\u2019s ambition to develop a gigawatt-scale pipeline of battery storage opportunities, combining owned assets with third-party optimisation, route-to-market services and commercial structures such as floors and tolling arrangements.<\/p>\n

Drax already provides route-to-market services for around 2,000 embedded third-party renewable assets, representing approximately 800MW of capacity, through its Drax Energy Solutions business.<\/p>\n

Flexitricity employs around 85 people, all of whom are expected to join Drax following completion of the deal.<\/p>\n

Chief executive Will Gardiner said the acquisition was a strong strategic fit for the group\u2019s FlexGen business.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are ambitious about growing and developing our FlexGen business and Flexitricity\u2019s technology and team are a strong strategic fit for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that Flexitricity\u2019s use of artificial intelligence and advanced machine learning, delivered through its proprietary platform, would support Drax\u2019s growth options, particularly its plans for a gigawatt-scale battery storage portfolio.<\/p>\n

Gardiner also said the deal would help Drax continue to support energy security in the UK power system while delivering new energy services to customers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to welcoming Flexitricity\u2019s employees to the group and working with its customers following completion of the acquisition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
