One Health Group plc has confirmed it has cleared the final environmental pre-commencement planning condition for its first purpose-built Surgical Hub in Scunthorpe. Construction is set to begin imminently.

The independent provider of NHS-funded procedures said the planning sign-off represents a key milestone as it moves ahead with the development of its community-based surgical hub model.

One Health said that the Scunthorpe development will be delivered within its targeted one-year construction schedule and in line with the previously guided capital cost of £8m to £9m.

Once operational, the hub is expected to provide additional operating theatre capacity dedicated to NHS patients referred by their GP under the ‘Patient Choice’ framework. Management believes the facility has the potential to materially enhance group revenues and profitability, while supporting efforts to reduce NHS waiting lists.

Chief executive officer Adam Binns described the start of construction as a “significant milestone for the business,” adding that the group remains focused on introducing surgical capacity in regions where NHS or independent provision is limited and patient demand remains high.

The project is aligned with the UK Government’s push to deliver more care in community settings through geographically separate surgical hubs, designed to protect elective capacity from acute hospital pressures and help alleviate procedure backlogs.

Further updates are expected as construction progresses at the Scunthorpe site.
