She tells Sheryl Moore how she’s reshaping a UK mid-market tech firm for the AI era – betting on an asset-light model while sustaining a 25-year push to change who gets to lead in technology.

When Michelle walked into Redcentric’s boardroom, she did more than take a seat – she rewrote the playbook. Within months of becoming chief executive, she executed a circa £127m sale of the company’s data centre portfolio. What might have seemed radical was, in her view, strategic clarity. For a mid-market managed services provider navigating an AI-driven future, it was not a retreat but a launchpad.

A veteran of global boardrooms across six continents, Michelle arrived in Harrogate with deep international experience. She had worked in emerging markets, negotiated fibre-optic deals across post-Soviet Europe, and helped scale cloud services at Vodafone and Citrix. At Redcentric, however, she found a board strong in financial expertise but lacking operational strategy.

“The first question I asked was simple: ‘What’s our strategy for the data centres?’” she recalls. “And the room went quiet.”

That silence signalled an asset base without clear direction. The data centres were valuable but capital intensive and under-integrated. In an AI-driven era, that mismatch mattered.

Michelle assessed what would be required to make them AI-ready: advanced cooling, upgraded power, specialist environments and sustained capital investment. Beyond the technical requirements, she also considered the speed at which AI infrastructure is evolving, where today’s cutting-edge investment can quickly become tomorrow’s legacy burden.

“To do what was needed for AI readiness would have been a huge capex commitment, and our shareholders weren’t aligned with that vision,” she explains.

Redcentric’s AIM-listed shareholder base was not structured to fund long-term infrastructure transformation. Rather than compromise, she chose separation: sell the data centres to a specialist operator while retaining them as a customer. This approach allowed the business to remain close to the infrastructure layer without bearing the financial and operational weight of ownership.

“It wasn’t about shrinking the business,” she says. “It was about unleashing it to grow where we have a real edge.”

The £178m deal freed capital, reduced operational burden and sharpened focus, repositioning Redcentric toward higher-margin managed services. It also created flexibility, enabling the company to invest in talent, software capabilities and customer-facing innovation rather than fixed assets.

She sees this as part of a broader industry shift. While hyperscalers invest billions in vertically integrated AI infrastructure, mid-sized firms cannot compete at that scale. Instead, they must identify where they can add value in the ecosystem.

“MSPs like us are the bridge,” she says. “We already have AI-ready infrastructure. Our role is to help customers ring-fence critical data, apply AI to real problems, and protect it.”

In her view, AI is not a trend, but an operational discipline rooted in data governance and security. Companies that fail to address those foundations risk investing heavily in tools that never deliver meaningful outcomes.

“AI isn’t an abstraction,” she says. “It only works when your data is organised, secure and actionable.”

She is sceptical of what she calls “AI theatre” in the mid-market – superficial adoption without practical outcomes. For her, credibility comes from execution, not experimentation for its own sake.

Her decisiveness stems from a career shaped in complex environments. Early on, she worked in politically volatile regions, building telecoms infrastructure across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where commercial decisions were often intertwined with geopolitical realities.

“That period taught me that decisive action, even under risk, creates opportunity,” she says. “Waiting for consensus rarely gets the job done.”

In some markets, being a woman proved advantageous. “They gave me more time. I got more information and won more business,” she says.

In Western markets, she encountered more structural resistance, reinforcing her belief that progress requires both visibility and persistence.

Her path begins far from North Yorkshire. She grew up across Kansas, Michigan and Iowa in a family where achievement and public service were central. Her father played professional baseball for the Washington Senators before becoming a university chancellor. Her mother also became a chancellor before moving into finance as a stockbroker and planner.

Kansas, she says, was “a great place to grow up”, and she often points to a statistic that shaped her worldview: more than 60 per cent of Fortune 1000 CEOs once came from the American Midwest. For her, it reflects a culture grounded in “honesty and hard work” – traits she still carries into boardrooms today.

At the University of Kansas, she studied business and political science, initially driven by a clear ambition: to become the first female US Secretary of State. That goal took her to Washington DC, where she worked on Capitol Hill, at the White House and later as a lobbyist.

But politics, she concluded, lacked the immediacy she craved.

“You don’t feel anything tangible,” she says. “I liked going into business and having outcomes.”

She pivoted to international business studies at Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University, an institution built for global trade and multilingual immersion. That training became the foundation for a career defined by cross-border complexity.

Her first corporate roles came in the newly deregulated US telecoms sector after the AT&T break-up. The regional “Baby Bells” were domestic in capability but global in ambition, and she was part of the cadre sent abroad to build international partnerships.

She worked on joint ventures, international bids and expansion strategies across Europe and emerging markets. It was during this period she moved into the infrastructure backbone of the internet age – fibre-optic networks, early data systems and cross-border connectivity.

The work was often unconventional. In Serbia during the conflict in the Baltics, she was smuggled out of the country hidden in a telecoms’ cargo box. Her children, she says, believed for years she had been a spy.

By 2000, she had moved into software and data centres, relocating to London to build a pan-European business—just as the dot-com bubble collapsed. Despite the timing, she successfully sold the company and protected investor value, reinforcing her ability to operate under pressure.

Senior roles at Cable & Wireless, Vodafone and Citrix followed, spanning cloud, infrastructure and hyperscaler partnerships. This combination of physical and digital expertise later shaped her approach at Redcentric, giving her a practical understanding of both legacy systems and future technologies.

She first joined the company as a non-executive director and remuneration chair. What stood out was a lack of operational leadership.

“I was the only person who had run a business like that,” she says.

That gap ultimately led to her appointment as CEO, with a mandate not just to manage but to redefine the company’s direction.

Alongside her corporate work, Michelle co-founded the Women in Technology network in the UK more than 25 years ago, after frequently finding herself the only woman in senior roles. The initiative has quietly influenced careers behind the scenes, supporting women as they navigate promotion pathways and board-level opportunities.

What began as informal networking evolved into mentoring, board-level support and engagement with recruiters and FTSE companies. The initiative remains voluntary and non-commercial, driven by a long-term commitment to structural change.

Progress, she says, has been uneven.

“In some respects, we’ve gone backwards,” she notes. Many women leave the industry in their 30s due to family pressures and a lack of visible role models, creating a gap in senior leadership pipelines.

Her leadership philosophy centres on speed and clarity. “You can’t hedge forever,” she says. “Sometimes decisive action is the most strategic move.”

That mindset drove the rapid carve-out and sale of Redcentric’s data centres – an operationally complex process involving contracts, leases and regulatory detail, executed under tight timelines.

She describes the company’s culture as strong but still evolving. “People are engaged and collaborative. But pace is a mindset. If the decision is right, you move.”

She also views infrastructure through a geopolitical lens. Data sovereignty is becoming increasingly important for European clients, particularly as regulatory frameworks tighten and cross-border data flows come under scrutiny.

“They’re asking, ‘Where is my data? Who can access it?’ Even in the cloud, they want control.”

This positions Redcentric as a secure, domestic managed services provider in a fragmented regulatory environment, where trust and compliance are becoming as important as technical capability.

Outside the company, she sits on the board of GBG and a non-executive director and has held similar roles in the semiconductor sector. Her life spans multiple geographies, with time divided between London, Washington DC and Italy.

She shows little interest in slowing down. While many CEOs remain in post for only a few years, her focus is on transformation rather than tenure, with a clear emphasis on building sustainable momentum.

For Redcentric, the goal is clear: a leaner, more focused managed services business positioned at the intersection of AI, data security and practical enterprise solutions.

For Michelle, the principle remains unchanged: “It wasn’t about shrinking the business. It was about unleashing it.”

Redcentric’s data centre divestment wasn’t a retreat – it was a calculated pivot.
