Sixteen cultural venues, museums and libraries across Yorkshire and the Humber are to receive £11m to improve access to arts and culture.

The funding, from the government’s Arts Everywhere Fund, will support infrastructure projects at organisations including the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, Yorkshire Museum and East Riding Libraries.

The Stephen Joseph Theatre will receive £2.7m to carry out essential repairs and upgrade the McCarthy studio theatre and cinema, improving access for performers, staff, volunteers and audiences.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: “Cultural organisations across Yorkshire and the Humber are important custodians of local identity and play a key role in the story we tell ourselves as a nation.

“Arts and culture are the beating hearts of our communities, they have the power to unite us in the face of division and break down barriers to opportunity. We want to harness the power to help us build a brighter future for the people of Yorkshire and the Humber.”

York Museums Trust has been awarded £2m to repair water damage to the Grade I listed Yorkshire Museum, one of the country’s first purpose-built museums. The award will redesign the roof to protect the building and its collections.

Other projects include Yorkshire Dance, which will receive £750,000 to convert unused space into a new dance studio and three offices for creative organisations, while improving access to its foyer, seating, changing areas and toilets.

Kirklees Museums and Galleries will receive £1.6m for urgent repairs to Oakwell Hall, including repointing, stone repair, roof work and accessible toilet relocation.

East Riding Libraries has been awarded £300,000 for a major refurbishment of Goole Library to create a reimagined space that better meets the needs of the local community.

The funding is administered and delivered by Arts Council England on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Rebecca Ball, area director for the North at Arts Council England, said: “Our museums, libraries and arts organisations have the power to change lives, they give us access to new worlds, teach us about our heritage and give us new perspectives on life.”

In total, 130 organisations across the country are receiving funding, marking the first projects to receive cash from the Arts Everywhere Fund.

The funding is split across three programmes: the Creative Foundations Fund allocated £6m to eight arts venues, the Museum Estate and Development Fund allocated £4.2m to four museums, and the Libraries Improvement Fund allocated £856,000 to four library services.

Earlier this year, the Culture Secretary committed up to £1.5bn to the cultural sector over this parliament, with the Arts Everywhere Fund aiming to save more than 1,000 arts venues, museums, libraries and heritage buildings across England.
