{"id":2155051,"date":"2026-05-29T07:41:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T06:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/yorkshire\/?p=2155051"},"modified":"2026-05-29T07:41:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T06:41:13","slug":"asda-bags-ocado-tech-for-online-overhaul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/yorkshire\/news\/2155051-asda-bags-ocado-tech-for-online-overhaul","title":{"rendered":"Asda bags Ocado tech for online overhaul"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"relative z-1\">\n<div class=\"z-1 relative md:sticky md:top-(--sticky-padding-top)\" data-testid=\"writing-block-header-sticky-container\">\n<div class=\"relative isolate flex w-full items-center justify-between gap-3 font-sans py-2.5 pe-3\" data-testid=\"writing-block-header-surface\">\n<div class=\"bg-token-bg-primary pointer-events-none absolute inset-0 -z-1 dark:bg-[#2a2a2a]\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-writing-block-fullscreen-header-surface=\"true\">Asda has struck a major technology partnership with Ocado Group to overhaul its online grocery operations, marking a significant shift in strategy for the supermarket giant as competition intensifies in the UK ecommerce market.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"writing-block-editor markdown-new-styling relative flow-root pt-(--writing-block-editor-pt) pe-(--writing-block-editor-pr) pb-(--writing-block-editor-pb) ps-(--writing-block-editor-pl)\">\n<div class=\"ProseMirror markdown prose dark:prose-invert w-full min-h-6 break-words focus:outline-none writing-block-open-link-mode\" dir=\"auto\" data-writing-block-fullscreen-editor-region=\"true\" data-writing-block-fullscreen-editor-layout=\"inline\">\n<p>The retailer will deploy Ocado\u2019s smart platform across its ecommerce business from 2027, replacing its existing infrastructure and introducing new capabilities across stores and dark stores nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement will see Ocado provide end-to-end technology solutions for Asda\u2019s online operations, including webshop services, in-store fulfilment systems and software designed to improve last-mile planning and delivery efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Leeds-headquartered Asda currently fulfils more than 700,000 ecommerce orders every week through a network of stores and dedicated dark stores across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The retailer said the new platform will support scheduled and short lead-time deliveries, as well as click and collect services. It will also enable Asda to fulfil orders placed through rapid delivery partners including Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Steiner, chief executive of Ocado Group, said the partnership would give Asda access to technology already operating at significant scale globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK remains one of the world\u2019s most competitive and fast-evolving online grocery markets, where technology, scale and continuous innovation are increasingly important for retailers looking to maintain leadership positions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough this partnership, Asda will be able to deploy a technology platform already processing more than 70 million orders annually worldwide, supporting market-leading customer propositions across 11 countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal represents another high-profile customer win for Ocado as it continues to expand the reach of its technology platform beyond its own retail joint venture with Marks &amp; Spencer.<\/p>\n<p>Asda executive chairman Allan Leighton said the investment would help improve the customer experience and support the retailer\u2019s longer-term growth ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that continued success in this highly competitive market is dependent on providing a positive experience for customers every time they shop,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartnering with Ocado will strengthen our online offer and provide a consistent and high-quality experience for millions of shoppers, from order through to delivery, while supporting our Formula for Growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asda generated sales of more than \u00a321bn in 2025 and operates around 1,100 stores across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Ocado said the transaction is not expected to have a material financial impact during FY26. The technology group is targeting positive cash flow in the second half of the current financial year, with full-year cash flow positivity expected in FY27.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div
