A Sheffield company\u00a0 developing carbon-negative construction materials has opened its first UK factory as it prepares to expand production and target growing demand for low-carbon building products.<\/p>\n
earth4Earth has launched the facility at Farfield Road in Neepsend, where it will manufacture bricks and brick slips made from recycled soil sourced from construction projects. The company plans to follow the opening with a larger UK production plant in 2027, creating around 20 jobs and serving customers across the UK and Europe.<\/p>\n
The company will manufacture earth-based bricks and brick slips using soil sourced from UK construction projects, where excavated material would otherwise be sent to landfill.<\/p>\n
The materials are produced using a compression process rather than traditional firing methods and are made from soil, sand and a proprietary lime-based binder designed to improve strength and durability.<\/p>\n
earth4Earth says its manufacturing process significantly reduces emissions compared with conventional brick production. While traditional lime production takes place at temperatures of around 900\u00b0C, the company’s process operates at room temperature.<\/p>\n
The binder also captures carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere and permanently stores it within the material, enabling the bricks and slips to achieve a carbon-negative footprint across their lifecycle.<\/p>\n
The products are fully recyclable and can either be crushed and remanufactured into new bricks or returned to the earth.<\/p>\n
Founder and director Lei Zhang said: “Our materials are carbon negative, even when transportation is taken into account, but we want to reduce our carbon footprint even further, wherever we can.<\/p>\n
“We have found Sheffield to be a very supportive place to have a start-up, and we are thrilled to be opening our first UK factory in the city.<\/p>\n

The business previously operated from laboratory and office space at Sheffield Technology Parks, where it refined the technology behind its products.<\/p>\n
The Neepsend facility will initially focus on manufacturing brick slips and sample bricks as part of a phased expansion strategy.<\/p>\n
earth4Earth already operates a manufacturing plant in Wuhan, China, capable of producing 300,000 bricks each month. The Sheffield factory represents the first stage of plans to establish larger-scale UK production.<\/p>\n
The company intends to open a second UK factory in 2027 with capacity equivalent to its Chinese operation. The new facility is expected to create around 20 jobs and supply customers across the UK and Europe, while the Wuhan plant continues to serve Asian markets.<\/p>\n
earth4Earth’s products have already been used on projects in Sheffield, Manchester, London and China as demand grows for lower-carbon construction materials.<\/p>\n
