A Sheffield-founded materials recovery business has rebranded as MATIQ as it enters its next phase of growth, backed by a major local authority contract and plans for a £50m flagship recovery facility in Gateshead.

The company, which was established in Sheffield in 2013 as Direct Special Metals (DSM), said the new identity reflects its evolution from a specialist metals recycler into a national materials recovery infrastructure platform serving local authorities, waste management companies and commercial customers.

The relaunch follows a period of significant investment, including the completion of a £25m materials recovery facility in Sheffield in 2024, which the business says has created one of the UK’s most advanced recovery plants and laid the foundations for further expansion.

Alongside the rebrand, MATIQ has secured a contract with City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council to receive and process co-mingled dry mixed recycling collected across the district. The agreement runs until March 2029, with the option of a one-year extension.

The company is also progressing plans for a £50m materials recovery facility at Derwenthaugh Ecoparc in Gateshead. Once complete, the site is expected to significantly increase MATIQ’s processing capacity and create a strategic recovery hub serving customers across the North East and beyond.

Chief executive Anthony Holley said: “The launch of MATIQ reflects both the scale of the business we have become and the opportunity that lies ahead.

“The award of the Bradford contract and our investment at Gateshead are significant milestones in our growth, strengthening our position as a leading provider of advanced resource recovery infrastructure.

“Bradford and Gateshead represent only part of our growth strategy. We are actively progressing further opportunities that will extend MATIQ’s recovery infrastructure platform into additional strategic locations across the UK.”

Founder and chief operating officer Matt Hartley added: “It is a source of real pride to see what began as a small specialist metals operator in Sheffield in 2013 grow into the platform we have today.

“Our £25m investment in Sheffield laid the foundations for this next stage, and the scale of what we are now building reflects the strength of that foundation.”

MATIQ employs around 120 people, generates annual turnover of approximately £26m and processes hundreds of thousands of tonnes of material each year as demand grows for more transparent and accountable resource recovery solutions.
