Torsion Group’s\u00a0 specialist care home business, Torsion Projects, has been hit with a winding-up petition just days after its sister company sought insolvency protection.<\/p>\n

TheBusinessDesk.com can reveal that the petition has been lodged by construction equipment supplier, YardLink.\u00a0 The filing follows Torsion Construction’s filing of a notice of intention to appoint administrators on Monday.<\/p>\n

In a statement Torsion Group said the winding up petition is the result of a ‘commercial dispute’ which the company will vigorously defend. A Torsion Group spokesperson said: “The Notice of Intention to Appoint Administrators (NOI) announced earlier this week relates solely to Torsion Construction Limited. Torsion Projects is a separate legal entity, operating independently both contractually and operationally, and continues to trade as normal.<\/p>\n

“Torsion Projects has paid all undisputed sums due to Yardlink. The amounts referred to in the proposed winding-up petition are the subject of a genuine and longstanding commercial dispute between the parties. Those matters are being addressed through the appropriate legal process, and Torsion Projects will defend its position robustly.<\/p>\n

“Torsion Projects remains focused on delivering for its clients and partners and continues to fulfil its contractual obligations in the ordinary course of business.”<\/p>\n

The company specialises in the delivery of care homes, retirement living and residential developments, providing project management and construction services from planning through to completion.<\/p>\n

Its recent work includes a 66-bed care home in Otley, West Yorkshire, alongside a pipeline of care and retirement living schemes across Yorkshire, the East Midlands and Lincolnshire. Its latest filed accounts show turnover rose to \u00a347m in the year to 31 December 2024, up from \u00a336.8m a year earlier.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week Torsion Construction, the residential and student accommodation specialist has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, just months after seeing off a winding-up petition from M&E contractor J H Shouksmith & Sons.<\/p>\n

The contractor had grown to be a major player in Yorkshire and the wider UK since it was founded in 2015.<\/p>\n

Its schemes in Leeds include Sky Gardens, a 35-storey residential scheme on Water Lane which topped out last December<\/a>, and The Phoenix, which will deliver 367 apartments in 15 and 21-storey towers. It also has student schemes across the North and Midlands, including Leeds, Coventry, Nottingham and York<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Torsion Construction told TheBusinessDesk.com: “This decision has not been taken lightly. It follows a prolonged period of exceptionally challenging trading conditions across the UK construction sector, together with a number of commercial events that have materially impacted the liquidity of the construction business.<\/p>\n

“Over the past two years, Torsion Construction has experienced significant short-term liquidity pressures arising from a combination of delayed capital events, project-specific commercial matters, regulatory changes and wider market conditions.<\/p>\n

“In addition, the introduction of direct payment arrangements on a number of projects successfully protected clients, supported project continuity and safeguarded payments to many supply chain partners, but significantly reduced the working capital available to the construction business.”<\/p>\n

The company is working with restructuring specialists Interpath and its investors, funders and professional advisers “to pursue a number of advanced liquidity initiatives and determine the best possible outcome for the business and its stakeholders”, it said.<\/p>\n

This process relates solely to Torsion Construction and the group’s other businesses “continue to operate and remain focused on delivering for their customers, investors and funding partners”.<\/p>\n
