Yorkshire defence specialist North Defence has completed its latest mission to support Ukraine, delivering a sixth heavy firefighting vehicle to the country’s emergency services.

Managing director and British Army veteran Oliver North travelled 2,200km from the company’s innovation centre in Luxembourg to Kyiv to personally hand over a Rosenbauer Panther 8×8 to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

The airport crash-and-rescue vehicle is designed for rapid response to large-scale incidents and will be used by Ukrainian emergency responders dealing with the aftermath of Russian strikes.

Its deployment will particularly support operations at damaged fuel depots, warehouses and critical infrastructure.

The latest delivery was made possible through Halifax-based North Defence’s collaboration with the Luxembourg Directorate of Defence and the Ukrainian Firefighters Foundation.

North also travelled to Ukraine in a Mercedes Vito van purchased and donated by the company to the charity.

The mission reflects North Defence’s growing role in supporting frontline operations, with the business combining military experience with rapid-response engineering and vehicle manufacturing.

The company has roots stretching back to 2008 and operates across Europe, with an engineering innovation hub in Luxembourg and a manufacturing facility in Yorkshire.

North said its approach is focused on developing vehicles capable of adapting to the demands of modern defence and emergency operations.

During his latest visit, North also completed the Ukrainian Firefighters Foundation’s off-road driving and vehicle recovery course alongside the unit, allowing him to gain further first-hand insight into the conditions facing emergency crews.

He said: “These guys are operating in some of the toughest conditions on the planet. That’s why we try to get over there as often as we can, to gain an ever-deeper understanding of the modern battlefield.

“‘Agile’ is more than just a buzzword for us. We’re built to adapt rapidly, and there’s no more effective way to continually refine and optimise our production, than being alongside this unit in person.”

The risks facing the crews were brought into sharp focus just hours before the handover ceremony, when a ballistic missile struck nearby.

The incident provided a stark reminder of the conditions faced daily by Ukraine’s emergency responders.

North said the resilience of those working on the frontline remained a major source of inspiration for the business.

“Despite an indescribable amount of adversity, the courage, resilience and determination of this community remains a constant source of inspiration,” he said.

“What began as a partnership four years ago, has evolved into a deep-rooted friendship. I continue to be in awe of this heroic team.”

The latest mission builds on North Defence’s previous work in Ukraine.

The company last visited the country in March, delivering a number of its light mobility vehicles and General Service Vehicles to Ukraine’s GUR Special Forces.

The sixth heavy firefighting vehicle adds further capability to the emergency response fleet as Ukraine continues to deal with attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure.

For North Defence, the mission also underlines the role of its Yorkshire manufacturing and engineering operation in developing and supplying specialist vehicles for demanding frontline environments.
