A Church Fenton nursery has completed a £700,000 redevelopment which has increased its capacity by more than half and secured its future through a new 21-year lease.

Jigsaws Childcare Nursery has transformed its former prefabricated building into a new two-storey, energy-efficient facility, increasing places from 51 to almost 80.

The not-for-profit organisation, which was established in 2007, provides full-day nursery care, wraparound before and after-school clubs and support for children with special educational needs.

The redevelopment was driven by growing demand for childcare places in Church Fenton and the surrounding area.

The original portable building, which had housed the nursery since it was founded, was no longer considered fit for purpose and has been replaced with a new modular facility designed to support the organisation’s long-term growth.

Working with architects Henszel Designs and modular building specialist Phoenix Building Systems, the new facility was constructed off site before being delivered in 14 separate pods.

The sections were craned into position at the Church Fenton site over three days in early August.

York law firm Hethertons Solicitors played a key role in securing the legal foundations for the project.

Helen Smith, business manager at Jigsaws Childcare Nursery, said the legal support had been instrumental in allowing the organisation to proceed with the project.

The legal work was led by Neal MacDonald, assistant property solicitor at Hethertons, alongside Jessica Roberts, head of corporate.

MacDonald said the project demonstrated the importance of having the right legal arrangements in place to support long-term investment.

He said: “By securing a new 21-year lease and completing the associated licence for works, we’ve been able to provide Jigsaws with the certainty it needs to invest confidently in its future.”

He added that the agreement provided the nursery with flexibility as it continues to grow.

The new building will be rented over an eight-year period, giving Jigsaws the option to adapt its arrangements or relocate in the future if required.
