A temporary market featuring 66 stalls will open in Huddersfield this week as work gets under way to restore the town’s Grade II listed market hall.<\/p>\n
The new temporary market, located on land between the existing market on Brook Street and the Tesco car park, will open for business on 13 August.<\/p>\n
The move marks the next stage of a major regeneration project aimed at securing the future of one of Huddersfield’s most recognisable historic buildings and creating a more modern market offer for traders and shoppers.<\/p>\n
The temporary facility has been designed to allow traders to continue operating while work takes place on the existing market hall.<\/p>\n
It will feature 36 indoor stalls and 30 outdoor stalls, with capacity for up to a further 28 stalls on Byram Street on busier market days.<\/p>\n
The site also includes public and accessible toilets, a market office and space for other essential facilities.<\/p>\n
David Shepherd, executive director for place at Kirklees Council, said maintaining a market presence in the town had been a priority during the redevelopment.<\/p>\n
He said: “We know how important it is to maintain a market presence in the town and the temporary market allows us to do this and its location makes sure there is a familiarity for customers and visitors.”<\/p>\n
The council says the first phase of the regeneration has been completed with minimal disruption, allowing the main market hall to remain open while the temporary facility was created.<\/p>\n
Shepherd added that the move represented an important milestone for the wider project.<\/p>\n
“This is a big milestone as we now move to phase two of the major project as we start work on the Grade II* listed market hall where the renovation work will secure its future, protect its heritage and build on the existing offer for customers,” he said.<\/p>\n
Hoarding will now be installed around the perimeter of the historic market hall and the construction site to separate the works from shoppers and traders using the temporary market.<\/p>\n
The main redevelopment will involve essential repairs and restoration to the market’s decorative cast-iron frame and roof.<\/p>\n
The building’s original colour scheme of traditional reds, pinks and creams will also be reinstated as part of the restoration.<\/p>\n
Alongside the heritage work, the scheme is designed to make the market more accessible.<\/p>\n
Improvements will include ramps, automatic doors and accessible toilets, as well as a new Changing Places facility. The indoor floor will also be levelled to make it easier for shoppers to navigate the building.<\/p>\n
Once complete, the refurbished market hall will contain more than 87 pitches.<\/p>\n
This will include 12 larger permanent stalls with built-in services and storage, alongside more than 75 demountable stalls designed to provide greater flexibility on market days.<\/p>\n
The new indoor demountable stalls will be around 50% larger than those currently available, giving traders more space to display their goods and operate their businesses.<\/p>\n
The redevelopment forms part of the wider Huddersfield Blueprint, the council’s programme to increase footfall and create a more vibrant and varied town centre.<\/p>\n
The market scheme is being delivered alongside other major projects, including Our Cultural Heart, the regeneration of the George Hotel and the TransPennine Rail Upgrade.<\/p>\n
Kirklees Council secured \u00a316.5m of Government funding in November 2023 towards the market regeneration.<\/p>\n
The funding must be spent by March 2028 and will support the creation of a modern market capable of hosting events as well as providing space for traders.<\/p>\n
