Huddersfield station will close for more than two weeks this autumn as work accelerates on the \u00a3multi-billion transformation of the Transpennine railway.<\/p>\n
The latest phase of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) will see the subway at Huddersfield station extended towards platforms 4, 5 and 6.<\/p>\n
Those platforms are also being remodelled to accommodate longer trains, creating additional capacity and more seats for passengers.<\/p>\n
Work will continue on the station’s historic ‘Euston-style’ roof, while the reconstruction of Deighton station will move forward with the installation of a new footbridge.<\/p>\n
The bridge will eventually include lifts, providing step-free access when the new station is completed in 2027.<\/p>\n
The latest works form part of the wider transformation of the railway between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York, which is designed to deliver more reliable, frequent and greener services across the Pennines.<\/p>\n
Track and drainage will also be renewed during the closure, alongside new track and overhead line equipment to support increased capacity and future electrification.<\/p>\n
Sophie Leishman, TRU sponsor, said the latest works represented \u201canother significant stage in the transformation of Huddersfield station and the wider railway\u201d.<\/p>\n
She added: \u201cWhile we know there will be some disruption while this work takes place, these upgrades are essential to delivering the more reliable, accessible and higher-capacity railway that customers deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n
The closure will affect businesses and commuters across the area, with Huddersfield and Slaithwaite stations both shut during the main works.<\/p>\n
The railway between Stalybridge and Mirfield will also be affected, while Mossley, Greenfield and Marsden stations will close on the weekends of 19-20 September and 3-4 October.<\/p>\n
Services will continue where possible using diversionary routes, which have benefited from more than \u00a3100m of investment.<\/p>\n
Where trains cannot operate, rail replacement buses will run, with Brighouse acting as the main rail and bus interchange during the works.<\/p>\n
Liam O’Shaughnessy, Transpennine Route Upgrade programme delivery lead at Northern, said the work would bring the region \u201canother step closer\u201d to a faster, more reliable and greener railway.<\/p>\n
A further major closure is already planned for Huddersfield.<\/p>\n
The station will close again for 38 days following the last service on Christmas Eve, allowing the main phase of the station redevelopment to be completed.<\/p>\n
Chris Nutton, Major Projects & TRU Director at TransPennine Express, said the programme was one of the biggest railway upgrades in the North.<\/p>\n
He added that the organisations involved shared the goal of creating \u201ca railway that’s more reliable, more accessible and fit for the future\u201d.<\/p>\n
