Forget the humble sandwich \u2013 York is getting a rather more Yorkshire way to grab lunch, with a Sunday roast being rolled up inside a giant Yorkshire pudding.<\/p>\n
Yorkshire Burrito is bringing its distinctive take on the nation’s favourite dinner to Coney Street, opening its first permanent high-street restaurant outside London at number 17.<\/p>\n
And for founder Henry Preen, the move is something of a homecoming.<\/p>\n
Preen grew up in York and founded Yorkshire Burrito in 2016 with a simple proposition: take the Sunday roast and make it portable.<\/p>\n
The result is exactly what it sounds like \u2013 slow-cooked roast meat or cauliflower cheese, crispy roast potatoes, stuffing, vegetables and gravy, all wrapped inside a giant Yorkshire pudding.<\/p>\n
Now, after building a following through London markets, food halls, events and a sizeable online audience, the independent business is heading back to where it all began.<\/p>\n
Preen said: \u201cOpening in York feels like bringing Yorkshire Burrito home.<\/p>\n
\u201cI grew up here, and the whole idea has always been rooted in the food, humour and generosity of Yorkshire.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe may have become known through our London sites, but this is a Yorkshire business through and through.\u201d<\/p>\n
Coney Street, he added, was \u201cthe perfect place\u201d for the brand’s first high-street restaurant.<\/p>\n
The York menu will centre on the signature roast-filled Yorkshire pudding wraps, alongside loaded roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, gravy and other British comfort food favourites.<\/p>\n
There will also be vegetarian and vegan options.<\/p>\n
The business has built its reputation on putting a playful spin on traditional British food and has appeared across national television, newspapers and food media, while its social media videos have attracted millions of views.<\/p>\n
But York represents something different for the brand.<\/p>\n
It is the first permanent high-street location outside London \u2013 and a chance for a Yorkshire-founded business to plant its flag firmly back in its home county.<\/p>\n
There is, of course, a certain logic to the move.<\/p>\n
If you are going to build a business around Yorkshire puddings, roast dinners and a healthy disregard for the conventional way of eating either, where better to open than York?<\/p>\n
The new Coney Street restaurant marks the next stage of Yorkshire Burrito’s expansion, with further details on the opening date, trading hours and launch plans set to be announced through the brand’s social media channels.<\/p>\n
For Preen, though, the biggest attraction is likely to be somewhat simpler.<\/p>\n
