Filey Sea Cadets are preparing to embark on their biggest adventure yet after securing planning permission for a £3.5m new headquarters designed to give generations of young people a place to learn, grow and find their sea legs.

North Yorkshire Council has given the green light to the long-awaited scheme at the existing Southdene Pavilion site, paving the way for the replacement of a 100-year-old building which has been home to the organisation for the past four decades.

The project has been ten years in the making and will see the existing site transformed into a modern training and community facility, with work to clear the site due to begin in November and construction scheduled to start in early 2027.

The new headquarters is expected to be completed in spring 2028, in time for the start of the sailing season.

With planning permission secured, the Sea Cadets are now launching a £3.5m fundraising campaign to bring the project home. Significant early-stage funding has already been secured, but the organisation is appealing to local residents, businesses, trusts and other organisations to help get the ambitious scheme across the finish line.

The plans received strong backing at a public consultation attended by more than 100 people over the summer, with 124 letters of support submitted by residents and prominent local figures.

Filey Sea Cadets is already ranked among the top five per cent of performing Sea Cadet units in the UK, and the new facilities are intended to build on that success.

The development will include modern training and communal accommodation, dormitories providing 48 beds for residential visits, lift access to improve accessibility for disabled cadets and volunteers, and storage for powerboats.

There will also be parking for cars and two minibuses, alongside a flexible community hall equipped with modern audiovisual technology that will be available to hire.

Steven Hopkinson, chair of Filey Sea Cadets, said the new headquarters would provide facilities to match the commitment of the young people, instructors and volunteers who had built the unit’s reputation.

“This is a pivotal moment for us,” he said. “Our existing building is no longer fit for purpose, and the new headquarters will provide facilities that reflect the dedication and commitment of everyone involved.”

He said retaining the existing site was essential because of its central location, ensuring the organisation remained accessible to young people across the community.

The project would do more than replace an ageing building, he added, creating the foundations for the next generation of Filey Sea Cadets and helping young people develop confidence, leadership, resilience and valuable life skills.

Kevin Hollinrake MP, who has supported the project, said planning approval was an important milestone for the town.

He said the new headquarters would be a “tremendous asset for Filey”, giving young people opportunities to develop skills, confidence and friendships.

The building itself has a long history in the seaside town. More than 100 years old, it has previously served as a theatre, flower hall and dance hall before becoming the Sea Cadets’ base around 40 years ago.

The redevelopment will also allow the unit to expand its sailing and leadership activities and host regional training camps for visiting youth groups from across Yorkshire.

For an organisation that has spent decades helping young people navigate challenges on and off the water, the latest decision marks a significant step towards a new chapter — one with more room to train, more opportunities to welcome young people and a new headquarters built for the journey ahead.
