Plans to build a new city centre hotel in Wakefield are moving forward, with work expected to start next summer on a development backed by up to \u00a38m of public funding.<\/p>\n

ION Property Developments is set to deliver a hotel with at least 110 rooms on the site of the former Westgate station, next to Wakefield Westgate railway station.<\/p>\n

The scheme is designed to capitalise on growing demand from tourists and business travellers, with the city hoping to persuade more visitors to stay overnight and spend money locally.<\/p>\n

Wakefield Council\u2019s Cabinet will consider the proposals at a meeting on Tuesday, 20 October. If approved, ION will carry out site investigations, complete outstanding design work and submit a planning application in spring 2027.<\/p>\n

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027, with the hotel due to open in winter 2028-29.<\/p>\n

Up to \u00a38m from the Local Regeneration Fund has been earmarked to make the development financially deliverable.<\/p>\n

The mid-range hotel is expected to strengthen Wakefield\u2019s visitor economy, while its location close to the East Coast Main Line and with short journey times to Leeds is intended to attract corporate guests.<\/p>\n

ION has more than 30 years\u2019 experience working with councils on urban regeneration projects across the UK, including schemes in Liverpool, Wirral, Wolverhampton and Denbighshire.<\/p>\n
