There are clear commercial reasons for this, and consolidation will undoubtedly continue to shape our industry.

However, I believe we need to consider what this means for the future of specialist monitoring, the relationships between providers and installers, and, ultimately, the customers who rely on these services.

Having spent 20 years in the security industry, I have seen the sector evolve considerably. My background has given me an understanding of security from both a technical and commercial perspective. Today, as Sales Director at DSOC, I work closely with installers and end users, and I believe there remains a compelling case for independent monitoring.

Monitoring is a specialist discipline

An ARC is not simply another service to attach to an installation contract or a wider security offering. It is a specialist operation in its own right, requiring dedicated technology, trained people, robust procedures and a culture built around making the right decisions when an alarm or event occurs.

As monitoring technology develops, those responsibilities are becoming more complex, not less.

Customers increasingly expect intelligent solutions, better integration, useful insights and a more proactive approach to security. Meeting those expectations requires continued investment in technology, operational processes and the people responsible for handling activations.

In my view, the strongest monitoring providers will be those that recognise this specialism and give it the attention it deserves.

That does not mean monitoring cannot sit successfully within a larger security group. It means the quality of the monitoring operation must remain central to the business, rather than becoming secondary to a broader commercial offering.

Independence creates opportunities for collaboration

One of the things I value most about DSOC is our independence from installation and guarding ownership.

We work predominantly through fire and security installers, supporting their relationships with customers rather than competing with them for installation or wider security contracts.

That model creates opportunities for collaboration. Installers can concentrate on designing, installing and maintaining systems, while we focus on providing the specialist monitoring service behind them.

For me, this is an important distinction. A monitoring partner should strengthen an installer’s offering, not create uncertainty about where the wider customer relationship might lead.

Of course, every business relationship depends on trust, regardless of ownership. But an independent model allows us to position ourselves clearly: our role is to support our partners and deliver professional monitoring.

I believe there is room in this market for different business models, and independence should remain a credible choice for installers looking for a specialist partner.

Technology matters, but people still make the difference

Artificial intelligence, video analytics and automation are changing how security events are assessed and managed. At DSOC, we recognise the opportunities these technologies offer to improve efficiency and help operators focus their attention where it matters most.

But technology is only part of the equation. Behind every effective monitoring operation are people who understand context, assess information and make decisions in accordance with the appropriate procedures. Recruiting, developing and retaining skilled monitoring professionals remains fundamental to delivering a dependable service.

The opportunity is to combine technology and human judgement effectively. Automation can help filter information and improve workflows, but the objective should always be better monitoring outcomes, not simply greater automation.

As the industry continues to innovate, I believe those who invest in both people and technology will be best placed to meet changing customer expectations.

Differentiation must be demonstrated

In a consolidating market, it is easy for providers to make similar promises about service, technology and expertise. The real difference is demonstrated through everyday performance.

It comes from understanding a customer’s requirements, responding consistently, investing in the right capabilities and building relationships that stand the test of time.

At DSOC, we have spent the years since our launch in 2020 building the business around specialist monitoring and partnerships with installers. I am proud of the progress our team has made, but I also understand that credibility must be earned continuously.

Independence alone does not guarantee quality, just as scale does not automatically mean a better service. Every monitoring provider must demonstrate its value through what it delivers.

A place for specialist monitoring

Consolidation will continue, and the security industry will keep evolving. I do not believe the future belongs exclusively to independent providers or larger security groups. Both can play an important role.

What matters is that specialist monitoring remains a priority, with investment in the technology, people and processes required to do the job properly.

For me, independence is not simply about ownership. It is about having a clear purpose, building trusted partnerships and remaining focused on the service we are there to deliver.

The question facing our industry is not just who owns the ARC. It is how effectively that ARC serves its customers, supports its partners and fulfils its responsibility when security events occur. That is where I believe the real difference will continue to be made.

Consolidation is reshaping the alarm receiving centre market as security
