{"id":2162596,"date":"2026-10-30T10:03:44","date_gmt":"2026-10-30T10:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/yorkshire\/?p=2162596"},"modified":"2026-10-30T10:03:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-30T10:03:44","slug":"1.45m-regional-transport-investment-plan-to-be-submitted-to-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/yorkshire\/news\/2162596-1.45m-regional-transport-investment-plan-to-be-submitted-to-government","title":{"rendered":"\u00a31.45m regional transport investment plan to be submitted to government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has said its region is poised to deliver the biggest co-ordinated investment in its transport network for a generation.<\/p>\n<p>SYMCA is preparing to submit its \u00a31.45bn Transport for City Regions (TCR) programme to government.<\/p>\n<p>The programme has been\u00a0developed in partnership with the region&#8217;s four local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>It will support the move to bus franchising, continue the renewal of Supertram fleet and infrastructure, fund rail projects including Rotherham Gateway and Waverley stations, improve transport links supporting the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and deliver more than \u00a3141m of investment in neighbourhoods across South Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<p>The programme forms a key part of the South Yorkshire Mayor&#8217;s ambition to create a fully integrated South Yorkshire People&#8217;s Network, connecting communities with jobs, education, healthcare and opportunities right across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Oliver Coppard said: &#8220;I\u2019ve been clear we need a world-class public transport system, to offer people real freedom and choice about how they travel and move right across South Yorkshire and build the transport network our communities deserve.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Funding through the Transport for City Regions programme would help make that vision a reality, supporting investment in better buses, a renewed Supertram network, stronger rail connections, improved links to Doncaster Sheffield Airport and better neighbourhoods across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This investment will help connect people to jobs, education, healthcare and opportunities, support economic growth and bring us another step closer to delivering our South Yorkshire People&#8217;s Network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>South Yorkshire&#8217;s Active Lives commissioner, Ed Clancy, added: \u201cBy creating better neighbourhoods and safer, high-quality routes, we can give people more freedom and choice in how they travel, while building healthier communities and making South Yorkshire a better place to live, work and play.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To create a healthier more prosperous region, people must feel safe walking, wheeling or cycling to school, work, the shops or public transport as part of a fully integrated People\u2019s Network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The programme will support improvements to public transport, renew and maintain existing infrastructure, unlock housing and economic growth, improve road safety and create better neighbourhoods across the region.<\/p>\n<p>It includes investment in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bus franchising, supporting the move to a publicly controlled bus network<\/li>\n<li>Supertram renewal, helping secure the network&#8217;s long-term future<\/li>\n<li>Highway maintenance and network resilience<\/li>\n<li>Local transport improvements across all four boroughs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The programme also includes significant investment to improve transport links supporting the wider Gateway East opportunity, including improved connectivity to Doncaster Sheffield Airport.<\/p>\n<p>A new public transport enhancement programme will deliver bus priority measures on key routes, while a regional bus shelter improvement programme will help create a more consistent and accessible experience for passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Funding will support continued renewal of South Yorkshire&#8217;s Supertram network through investment in track, fleet, facilities and passenger information systems. Further funding will help develop plans for future tram extensions.<\/p>\n<p>More than \u00a3125m has been identified to support the development and delivery of rail priorities including projects like Rotherham Gateway Station, Waverley Station and Sheffield Station enhancement.<\/p>\n<p>The programme will fund accessibility and connectivity improvements at stations including Chapeltown, Hatfield and Stainforth, Thorne North and Conisbrough, alongside a wider package of upgrades across the rail network.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a3141.1m Better Neighbourhoods programme will fund improvements to local streets, crossings, public spaces and walking, wheeling and cycling links across the region.<\/p>\n<p>Projects will feature investment in improving public transport journeys and road safety across the region. Examples include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barnsley\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dearne Valley Parkway bus and pedestrian improvements<\/li>\n<li>Goldthorpe Highgate Crossroads improvements<\/li>\n<li>Trans Pennine Trail upgrades<\/li>\n<li>New walking, wheeling and cycling connections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Doncaster\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improvements linked to community masterplans in Hexthorpe, Bentley, Intake, Lower Wheatley, Stainforth and Armthorpe<\/li>\n<li>City centre crossing upgrades<\/li>\n<li>Walking, wheeling and cycling improvements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Rotherham<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Effingham Street Gateway improvements<\/li>\n<li>Eastwood and Parkgate bridge enhancements<\/li>\n<li>Public realm and placemaking projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sheffield\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Darnall neighbourhood improvements<\/li>\n<li>Five Weirs Walk restoration<\/li>\n<li>Moorfoot Mobility Hub<\/li>\n<li>New walking, wheeling and cycling connections across the city<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The proposed programme was approved by the Mayoral Combined Authority Board this month and will be submitted to government as part of South Yorkshire&#8217;s wider Transport Delivery Programme.<\/p>\n<p>Subject to approval, delivery will begin from April 2027 and continue through to
