Yorkshire law firm Switalskis has seen pre-tax profits almost halve following investment in its senior team and expansion, with profitability expected to remain at similar levels this year.<\/p>\n
Switalskis, which employed an average of 385 people during the year, reported pre-tax profits of \u00a33.1m for the year to March 31, 2026, down from \u00a36.1m the previous year, despite turnover increasing 6% to \u00a332.6m.<\/p>\n
The Leeds-headquartered firm\u00a0recruited 12 new directors during the year, taking its total to 45, as it invested in growth, while directors’ remuneration increased by more than \u00a32m to \u00a35.1m.<\/p>\n
Switalskis said the reduction in profits was largely attributable to a change in how shareholders are paid, with remuneration previously distributed through dividends now paid through payroll, alongside investment in additional directors.<\/p>\n
The firm also highlighted rising employment costs, pointing to wage inflation, cost-of-living pressures and increased employers’ National Insurance contributions. Average fee earner numbers increased from 190 to 215 during the year.<\/p>\n
Operating profits fell by a third to \u00a34.3m, while administrative expenses climbed by \u00a32.4m to \u00a312.7m. Adjusted EBITDA fell more modestly, from \u00a36.4m to \u00a35.9m.<\/p>\n
Chief executive John Durkan said: “We have invested significantly over the last year in new senior team members, a new geographic location and a business acquisition. We have also introduced a single pay framework across the business to simplify our pay structure and ensure that our consistent and fair approach is applied in the same way for everyone in the firm.<\/p>\n
“Whilst this has impacted profitability in the short term, we are strengthening the foundations of our business to secure its future growth. We are comfortable with the profits retained in the latest accounting period as a firm that is investing for future growth.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are excited about what\u2019s ahead, while remaining true to our origins: supporting those who are vulnerable and improving access to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cash and cash equivalents, including overdrafts, fell by \u00a32.4m during the year, while net debt, excluding directors’ loans, rose from \u00a36.5m to \u00a37.3m.<\/p>\n
Interest payable increased from \u00a31.5m to \u00a32.2m, with the firm highlighting the lengthy working capital cycles associated with claimant litigation, which accounts for 62% of turnover.<\/p>\n
Switalskis secured an eight-figure refinancing package from HSBC UK in May, replacing its previous arrangements with Virgin Money, to support working capital and future acquisitions.<\/p>\n
Its expansion has included a move into Grimsby and, since the financial year-end, the acquisition of specialist legal costs business Calculus Legal Costs, which it expects to boost group profitability.<\/p>\n
Switalskis said it expects profitability to remain at a similar level in the current financial year and hopes to retain more than \u00a32m in profits, with the investment in its enlarged leadership team expected to deliver higher turnover and earnings in subsequent years.<\/p>\n
The firm is also seeking to diversify its revenue streams, with claimant services accounting for 62% of turnover, private client services 19%, legal aid 16% and commercial services 3%.<\/p>\n
Despite the fall in profits, net assets increased from \u00a311.3m to \u00a313.4m.<\/p>\n
