YourNews: Award winning butcher celebrates 25 years in business

Bentley’s, the award winning Pudsey butchers, is celebrating twenty five years in business. To mark this milestone, owner Steve Martin, baked a special celebratory pie which he shared with customers at his town centre shop.

“Independent butchers are one of the high street’s success stories”, says Steve. “Wherever you go in the UK, on local high streets the butcher is one of the few independent retailers still thriving. Pudsey is a prime example.”

On his first day’s trading on 25th March 1992, Steve had one employee and his day’s takings amounted to a rather paltry £5. He now employs 18 staff with a business turnover to match. Along the way he’s built an excellent reputation, not just for outstanding customer service, but a wide range of award winning meat products. He also operates a concession in a local farm shop specialising in high quality, locally produced food.

Steven and his team were: ‘Great Northern Pork Pie and Sausage Products’ Supreme Champions in 2010 and 2011. They were also Supreme Sausage’ Champions in 2011 – a remarkable double. More recently their Scotch Eggs were winners at the ‘Great Northern Pork Pie’ Competition.

Commenting on the reasons behind his success, Steve Martin said: “Around 90% of what we sell is locally sourced, so our customers know the provenance of what they’re buying. I think that adds to customer reassurance. We also take a keen interest in animal welfare, because that delivers a high quality product and, is again, something that customers look for nowadays. And of course we’re always pleased to offer advice on how to get the best results when cooking our products at home.”
