Leicester Shire Promotions has worked with tourism partners in Leicester to secure the latest major conference to be hosted in the city.

The British Geriatrics Society (BGS) will bring up to 750 delegates to the city for its annual BGS Autumn Meeting from 5-8 November 2019 with a repeat booking already confirmed for 2021.

The BGS is focused on improving health care for older people and has over 3,000 members including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. The meeting will be hosted by Curve theatre with a gala dinner to be held at a venue within the city. The BGS event will generate around £250,000 for the Leicester and Leicestershire visitor economy.

Leicester Shire Promotions initially identified the BGS meeting as an opportunity for Leicester to become the host location, approached the BGS team and then worked with local partners and venues including Curve to successfully bid for, and to secure the event. Leicester Shire Promotions will also work with the BGS and event organisers to support the meeting including the development and management of an online accommodation bookings site.

BGS’s chief executive, Colin Nee, said: “We are really excited to be bringing our national conference to Leicester. The conference will bring together hundreds of doctors practicing geriatric medicine, specialist nurses and therapists, researchers, and others engaged in ensuring that older people across the UK receive world class health care.”

Martin Peters, chief executive of Leicester Shire Promotions added: “We are delighted that the British Geriatrics Society has chosen Leicester for its annual conference in 2019 and for a return visit already booked for 2021. We worked closely with city partners and venues to put together a compelling bid and will continue to work with the event organisers to ensure that their delegates receive a fantastic welcome and experience a successful and productive meeting in our city.”
