Lincoln developer reveals plans for city centre scheme

How the new scheme could look

A developer which has received the green light for outline plans that could see either new offices, a hotel, residential or student accommodation built in Lincoln has hit back at accusations that the scheme won’t fit in with the city’s architectural heritage.

Jackson & Jackson Developments has fought off local opposition for its plans to build the four-storey scheme on a 9,000 sq ft plot of land on what is currently a pay and display car park on Grantham Street in Lincoln city centre.

Dominik Jackson, director at Jackson & Jackson Developments, told TheBusinessDesk.com: “After several discussions with multiple end users we have considered a number of possibilities for Grantham Street. The first option is for hotel use as there is a short fall of bed spaces in the city, the second being student accommodation. With the University of Lincoln going from strength to strength and being ranked in the UK top 10 in two categories in the latest edition of the Sunday Times Good University Guide, the student population in Lincoln continues to grow.

“This development poses a number of opportunities for Lincoln and will allow us to rebuild the inadequate parking currently in place, and redevelop land that at present lets the area down in terms of presentation.”

The City Council has granted permission for the scheme despite concerns over the size of the development. Jeremy Wright of Lincoln who owns lands next to the proposed site, wrote to the Council saying: “The scale and mass of the building is far too large, it is much too high and the design is mundane and uninspiring.”

Meanwhile, Anna Draper of Gainsborough, told the Council: “Yet again we are faced with another disappointing planning application for an unimaginative “box”. It is heart breaking to see the city that you love exploited by developers who want to put up yet another generic block of flats in such a mechanised and soulless way.”

Jackson added: “Jackson & Jackson Developments work with a local based team of construction consultants on all of our projects and we look forward to delivering this development within the vibrant city of Lincoln.”

Jackson and Jackson has been active in Lincoln over recent years. The firm is behind the One The Brayford scheme – a mixture of 89 apartments and three restaurant units, which it says will bring around 100 jobs to the city.
