Notts County owner quits Twitter to escape abuse

Alan Hardy

Alan Hardy, the Notts County owner, has said he has stopped posting on Twitter to save his family from the abuse he had been receiving.

Hardy, who had a high profile on the social media platform since taking over the Magpies in January 2017, said the “mindless negativity” aimed at him on Twitter isn’t healthy for him or his family.

Hardy has made the move as his search continues for a new manager. He sacked Harry Kewell last week after just 14 matches in charge, and County lie second-to-bottom of League Two and fighting to preserve their League status after a 3-0 defeat at home to relegation rivals Cheltenham Town at the weekend.

In a club statement, Hardy, said: “Those of you who use Twitter will know I have decided to take a break from the platform.

“I have never shied away from criticism or debate in my time as owner and chairman and fully understand supporters’ current frustration and anger, particularly following Saturday’s unacceptable performance against Cheltenham Town.

“Unfortunately, however, the level of personal abuse I am beginning to receive on Twitter means the positives of engaging via that platform are now far outweighed by the negatives.

“I’m fully aware that most of the mindless negativity directed towards me comes from so-called ‘trolls’ and supporters of rival clubs looking for a bite but it’s not healthy for me – or my family – to see a constant stream of such messages.

“At a time when I need clear, balanced judgement more than ever, it is the right decision to remove myself from the firing line.”

Hardy said he is close to appointing a new manager for the Meadow Lane club and has narrowed down a shortlist of three.

He added: “All three made excellent first impressions, demonstrating extensive experience and huge enthusiasm for the role.

“I look forward to meeting them all again to discuss things in more detail and hope to make an appointment later this week.”
