Liverpool FC choose McLaughlin and Harvey to build £50m training centre

The proposed complex in Kirkby

Liverpool FC has named McLaughlin and Harvey as the main contractor to build its £500m training complex in Kirkby.

The builder, which has offices in Belfast, Glasgow, London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, also won the Liverpool City Council tender earlier this year to build the Liverpool cruise terminal over the next three years.

According to Construction News, work on the Reds’ new training base will begin this October, and is expected to be complete by Spring 2020.

However, this is a year later than the original schedule.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said in May last year that he wanted to integrate the first team and the academy together in one facility.

Anfield bosses secured approval from Liverpool City Council last November to build 160 houses on its existing Melwood training complex in West Derby.

The new facility will cover a 34.6 ha site and will provide first team pitches, a full-size covered pitch, and a 499-person capacity viewing stand for guests.

A two-storey training centre, of 91,500 sq ft, will be located in the middle of the site.

London-based KSS is the architect delivering the scheme’s design, having been involved in the the club’s new main stand.

KSS has also worked with Brighton & Hove Albion on the construction of its Amex Stadium.
