Phase one of the Castle Street development, Cheetham House, has launched.

Situated at the historic site of the old Mill, the 38 affordable rent apartments have been sensitively designed specifically to fit in with the local area.

The scheme, just a minute’s walk from the town centre, sits on the banks of the River Tame.

Jonathan Reynolds, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, attended the event and unveiled a dramatic wall covering of a drone aerial image of the site and surrounding area.

Working with Tameside MBC, Stockport-based Rowlinson Construction, and Pozzoni Architects, the development is the first phase in a larger scheme to regenerate the mill site.

Phase two is currently under way, with 18 shared ownership and rent-to-buy apartments due to complete March 2020.

The former engine house will be restored and repurposed to become a central feature of the walled gardens to celebrate the historical significance of the site.

Jonathan Reynolds said: “It has been wonderful to see the transformation of the old mill site which promised a fantastic opportunity for regeneration.

“Cheetham House is a superb development and another exciting step forward in the journey to regenerate Stalybridge town centre.

“Congratulations to everybody who has worked so hard on the scheme. Cheetham House is, of course, just the first part of a larger housing scheme in this area, work on phase two has now begun and we all look forward to seeing the completion of the development in the Spring of next year.”

David Chilton, managing director of Rowlinson, said: “The Cheetham House project forms part of our wider involvement to help regenerate the centre of Stalybridge.

“We believe the town has a bright future with the investment that Rowlinson and the other partners are contributing. We’re proud to be delivering this new and affordable housing for the community.”

Charlie Norman, chief executive of MSV Housing Group, said: “There is a lack of town centre apartments in Stalybridge of this standard and for an affordable rent.

“The scheme is part of GM Mayor Andy Burnham’s Greater Manchester Town Centre Challenge, and MSV is very proud of the standard and quality of this aspirational development.

“It’s not been without its challenges, but we’re very happy with the result, and I personally am looking forward being here again to launch phase two.”

The overall build cost for both phases and is an investment of £5,964,487, which includes £1,392,000 grant funding from Homes England.
