Total Fitness re-opens in Wrexham

GYM operator Total Fitness is to re-open its Wrexham club in the new year, taking its total to 17.

The Wilmslow business, majority owned by its lenders Barclays and Co-op Bank after a debt-for-equity swap, is being advised by turnaround specialists Brian Davidson and Warwick Ley of RooGreen Ventures.

The Wrexham gym, owned by a private landlord, closed in 2011 with the firm blaming trading conditions and high rents. It was then put on the market with the land earmarked for housing.

But Total Fitness said around a £1m is now being invested in the premises which have a 25-metre pool.

Chief executive Richard Millman said: “we are really excited about coming back to Wrexham, where we are working with a locally based landlord to refurbish the facility, to deliver the widest health and fitness offering in the area at a really competitive price. Wrexham represents another major step forward in the Total Fitness journey and we look forward to making further steps forward in 2015 and beyond.”

According to figures released by the business earlier in the year, operating profits jumped to £1.9m from £620,000 in 2013, on sales of £29.6m, around the same as in the previous year. The business has around 80,000 members.
