Appointments: Baker Tilly; Hilary Meredith & more

BUSINESS adviser Baker Tilly has appointed Stephen Hunter as tax partner for the North West.

Hunter joins after 20 years with KPMG, and was latterly head of tax for the Lancashire, Cumbria & Merseyside region. 

Kevin Duffy, Baker Tilly’s office managing partner for Preston said: ‘I am very excited about Stephen joining the Preston team. His experience of dealing with a wide-range of tax issues and knowledge of the local market will help us to further enhance our offering to new and existing clients and is a key element to Baker Tilly achieving its growth plans for the Preston office.

HILARY  Meredith Solicitors, the Wilmslow-based firm, has been approved by the Bar Council to appoint and train a pupil with a view to her becoming the firm’s first In House Counsel.
 
Henrietta Hughes – who was called to the Bar in 2012 – has previously worked as a legal assistant to a QC and Senior Junior at Outer Temple Chambers and Temple Garden Chambers.
 
Hughes said: “Hilary Meredith Solicitors appeals to me for a number of reasons.  Firstly, the work is of the highest quality; there is a real range including everything from industrial disease to clinical negligence. In particular, the firm is instructed in a number of personal injury cases involving injured servicemen and women.  To be a member of the legal team endeavouring to secure them the best quality of life is an incredible opportunity.”

COLIN Gillespie is the new President of the Manchester Society of Chartered Accountants (MSCA) and has set out his agenda for his 12-month term of office, focusing on the themes of youth financial education, forging stronger links with the business community, improved engagement with business members and raising the profile of the MSCA.

He now heads the 5,100 strong membership group, which will continue to champion the Government’s move to create a Northern Powerhouse and devolution agenda which will undoubtedly see a shift in the relationship between regions and central government.

Gillespie is a member of the board of governors at the University of Manchester and is chairman of consultancy company People buy from People (PbfP Limited).

He said:  “I am delighted to be president of the Manchester Society of Chartered Accountants. The MSCA represents business and practice members in the regional business community and the views of its members to the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales).
