Fraudster former JJB boss must pay £633k says court

SHAMED retail boss Chris Ronnie, the former chief executive of JJB Sports, has been ordered to pay a confiscation order of more than £600,000 within three months, or face a further five years behind bars.

The Cheshire businessman was jailed for four years for fraud a year ago after a trial in London .

At hearing today at Southwark Crown Court, Ronnie was ordered to pay a confiscation order of £632,662.31.

Mark Thompson, head of the Serious Fraud Office’s Proceeds of Crime Division said: “The SFO is committed to ensuring that fraudsters do not retain the benefit of their crimes.  We will take steps to make sure the order is satisfied within the period set by the court.”

Ronnie’s Wilmslow home, his personalised number plate and a share in a house in Spain are now expected to be sold, along with designer watches.

The former squash player ran the sports retailer between August 2007 and March 2009, during which time its share price tumbled from more than £2 to less than 3p.

Wigan-based JJB never recovered from the period of decline under Ronnie and went on to collapse in September 2012, with the loss of thousands of jobs.
