Architect plans £9.8m sustainable extra care scheme

LIVERPOOL-based John McCall Architects has revealed plans to build a £9.8m sustainable extra care facility with a dedicated dementia wing in Anglesey, North Wales.

Named Hafan Cefni, it will see 63 modern apartments for residents aged over 55.

It will enable people with a range of support needs to remain independent while having access to communal facilities and 24 hour care assistance.

McCall designed the scheme for Tŷ Glas Housing Society, which is part of the Pennaf Housing Group working in partnership with the Isle of Anglesey County Council and the Welsh Government.

It comprises of 19 two-bedroom and 44 one-bedroom apartments and will also include a community café for the wider Llangefni neighbourhood to enjoy.

Hafan Cefni is being built on the site of the former Ysgol y Bont School in Industrial Estate Road, Llangefni.

By taking advantage of the sloping site, the lower ground floor will offer dedicated accommodation with its own outside space for older people with memory loss or living with dementia.

The building’s horseshoe shape also creates a natural open and central courtyard that will feature a communal garden.

Larger parts of the building’s elevation have been broken down with balconies and dwarf walls to give it an attractive domestic feel while providing variation and rhythm to the façade.

McCall director Carl Grannell said: “The scheme will provide high quality apartments in an enviable location, offering fantastic views and uninterrupted direct sunlight all year round.

“It has been designed to create an uplifting environment featuring an abundance of natural light to create an airy feel.

“The design and layout of the apartments and the scheme as a whole gives both independent living and opportunities to socialise, providing privacy as well as a focal point of the central courtyard.

“Hafan Cefni will be a prestigious scheme which will also be an integral part of the wider community.

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Pennaf Housing Group on this development, which is one of three important extra care housing provisions in North Wales which are currently in progress.”
