Birmingham short haul services boosted by Spanish airline

BIRMINGHAM Airport has received a boost to its short haul services with the decision by Spanish airline AlbaStar to begin flights from the hub.

The airline has launched twice weekly flights between Birmingham and Palma de Mallorca.

It said the airport’s unique location at the heart of the country had been a factor in its decision to start the flights because it would enable the carrier to draw on a large catchment area.

The route is being served by a 170-seat Boeing 737-400 aircraft. The services will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

William Pearson, Birmingham Airport’s Aviation Director, said: “We are very pleased to be welcoming AlbaStar – our twelfth new airline in the space of just over a year.

“Palma de Mallorca is a very well-known and extremely popular holiday destination from Birmingham Airport. We are sure this will be a popular route and carrier and we look forward to seeing it flourish.”

Michael Harrington, managing director of AlbaStar, said: “We are very pleased to start this new initiative at Birmingham Airport which we now hope becomes the central platform for our UK AlbaStar operations.

“Birmingham is ideally geographically situated and the airport has an excellent rail link which allows the airport to have an extended catchment area.”
