Rolls-Royce secures £125m order from Tunisair

AERO engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce has secured a major order worth £125m ($200m) to supply its Trent 700 engines to airline Tunisair for use in its fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft.

The order, which is the first time the airline has contracted the Trent engines, will be a major boost to the company following the engine failure which prompted a Quantas Airbus A380 to make an emergency landing in Singapore.

The Tunisair deal covers three of its airliners and includes the TotalCare® long-term service agreement.

Tunisair, the national carrier of Tunisia, is a scheduled and charter airline with a network that extends to the main cities of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It ordered the aircraft in July 2008.

Tunisair chairman and chief executive Nabil Chettaoui said: “The Trent 700 will power our A330s which will replace A300-600 aircraft and allow Tunisair to operate new scheduled flights to North America upon delivery from Airbus in 2012.”

The Trent 700 is the only engine specifically designed for the Airbus A330 and more than 1,000 are now in service or on firm order. Rolls-Royce has announced £1.4bn ($2.2bn) worth of Trent 700 orders in the last four months alone.

The engine remains the market leader for the aircraft, capturing 75% of orders over the last three years. Airlines favour it as it offers outstanding levels of performance and delivers the best payload capacity.

Metin Oktay, Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace Vice President – Africa, said: “We are delighted to welcome Tunisair as the latest in our family of Trent operators. The combination of the Trent 700 and the TotalCare® support package will deliver significant reliability and performance benefits to enhance its operations.”
