Appointments: Sir Roy Gardner becomes chairman at Spice; Tribunal expert joins Clarion; Barclays Business comes together; and more

SIR Roy Gardner has been appointed chairman of utilities support services provider Spice.

Spice has de-listed from the London Stock Exchange after being bought by private equity firm Cinven.

Sir Roy is chairman of catering and support services firm Compass and was previously chief executive of British Gas owner Centrica.

He is also the current chairman of Plymouth Argyle FC and has previously been chairman of Manchester United.

LEEDS-based legal firm Clarion has boosted its employment team with the appointment of employment tribunal expert Sarah Tahamtani as partner.

With 11 years’ experience in employment law, Ms Tahamtani joins from Cobbetts where she trained and qualified, rising to the position of legal director.

She has extensive experience in employment tribunal advocacy and specialises in strategic workforce issues and provides solution driven advice on corporate transactions.

Ms Tahamtani also advises clients on senior executive severances and delivers value added, bespoke training programmes.

BARCLAYS has announced four appointments to Barclays Business – the new team developed to support the small and medium business market across North Yorkshire.

The creation of Barclays Business brings together the bank’s business customers with under £1m turnover, with medium business customers of £1m to £5m turnover under one area.

The team, led by Tina Lowes, area business director, North East, will be based at Harrogate and has been drawn from across the Barclays network for their knowledge of helping and supporting medium sized business.

David Hunt and Mike Wicks join the team as relationship directors, while Sara Hornsby and Davinder Birthee have joined as relationship support managers.

Ms Lowes said: “The newly created team, which will operate throughout North Yorkshire, will increase the focus on the SME market, enhancing the products available for medium sized businesses and support Barclays aim to become the best business bank in the UK.”

YORKSHIRE Building Society has appointed Richard Wells to its general management team as he takes up the role of general manager – risk.
 
Mr Wells has worked at a number of major banks and joins the Yorkshire Building Society from Lloyds Banking Group where he was the risk director for its £345bn mortgage business.
 
He said: “I am very pleased to start my new role with the Yorkshire Building Society. Having spent my career within the lending and risk areas of a number of major institutions, I hope that I can add value to what is already an exceptionally strong general management and board team at Yorkshire Building Society.”
