Leeds restaurant handed a £5,000 bill

A £5,000 FINE has been slapped on the owners of a Leeds city centre restaurant.

The buffet restaurant OBM is owned by Lai Hong Cheong and is located on New York Street near Kirkgate Markets.

Ms Cheong pleaded guilty at Leeds Magistrates Court to five food hygiene offences.

Environmental health officers has visited in June 2015. They found dirty and broken equipment, dirty surfaces, and no where for staff to hygienically dry their hands.

Ms Cheong advised magistrates that the issues had been rectified shortly after the inspection.

Inspectors found in the summer of 2015 that the conditions in the restaurant posed a risk of harm to the public.

She was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £2,148.91 with £120 victim surcharge.

Councillor Mark Dobson, executive member for environmental protection and community safety, said: “Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or looking forward to catching up with friends over a meal, you expect the people preparing your food to be doing so in a clean, well-managed and maintained kitchen.

“Sadly this isn’t always the case and when standards of cleanliness slip we will take action.

“People shouldn’t forget that they can check what our environmental health officers find through the food hygiene rating scheme.”
