Yorkshire leaders honoured at the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours

YORKSHIRE leaders have been honoured at this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours on Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday.

Chairman of Fujitsu UK, Simon Blagden, who is also a non-executive chairman of Huddersfield-based Principle Global, a brand implementation business, has received a CBE for services to the economy and skills.

Dr Anthony James Bannan, whose Precision Technologies Group has a Hudderfield site has also been honoured with an OBE, as has Professor David Fleming, lately vice chancellor at York St John University, for services to Higher Education.

Hanif Malik, chief executive of Hamara was noted for services to sport, as was Pauline Hagan, Principal, North East Wakefield College, Pontefract and Debbie Bestwick of Mansfield and Wakefield-based Team17, inventors of the Worms computer game.

Roberta McClelland deputy director for Reforming FE Provision at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in Sheffield made the list, as did Dr Nima Smith, founder and director of Alchemy Anew, and physiotherapist Bhanu Ramaswary.

Dawn Whiteley of the National Enterprise Network, and formerly of the West Yorkshire Enterprise Agency has also been awarded an MBE for her services to business and enterprise. 

Others included in the Queen’s 2016 Birthday Honours:

  • Josie Teasdale, chair of governors at Barnsley College
  • Dr Geetha Upadhyaya, co-founder, chief executive and artistic director at Kala Sangam.
  • Paul Berriff for services to Humber Rescue Service,
  • Julia Bowman, Area Operations Manager, Yorkshire and Humberside for the Crown Prosecution Service.
  • Alyson Fender, Head, Higher Education Ministerial Briefing Team, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
  • Mark Airey, Help for Heroes
  • Mark Jones, city and regeneration manager Hull City Council

Other notables, the founder of Zoopla Alexander Chesterman, and the editor of Tech Crunch were also honoured, as well as Rod Stewart with a knighthood. Find a full list here .
